Principles of the Knights of Columbus
Fr. Michael J. McGivney, Founder
Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died often prematurely. The Orders top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do the good works of individual Knights, who gave more than 75.6 million service hours in 2017, illustrating how Catholics serve each other in fraternity and mercy.
Members of the Knights of Columbus, be they Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos, Poles, or Dominicans, are patriotic citizens. We are proud of our devotion to God and country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether its in public or private, the Knights remind the world that Catholics support their nations and are amongst the greatest citizens.
Since 1882, membership in the Knights of Columbus has been open to men 18 years of age or older who are "practical" (that is, practicing) Catholics in union with the Holy See. Since that time, the Knights of Columbus has understood "practical catholic" to mean a Catholic who accepts the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals, aspires to live in accord with the precepts of the Catholic Church, i and is in good standing in the Catholic Church.
Founded by a young parish priest now on the path to sainthood, the Knights of Columbus has helped strengthen men, their families, their parishes and their communities since 1882. Today, there are more than 1.9 million members of the K of C doing good across the world.
The Knights of Columbus stands as the strong right arm of the Church, and challenges members to grow in their faith through programs, fraternity and vital resources such as our award-winning magazine, Columbia, and many other exclusive member communications.
In the early part of 1960, before the formation of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, a group of Catholic Gentlemen from the Parish of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Garden City approached Bishop Baldwin who was in residence at St .Joseph and asked about starting a Knights of Columbus Council there. The Bishop blessed the men and told them to go out and do good works
The men met at the Garden City Hotel and on June 28, 1960 the Charter was ratified. The Twelve Apostles Council # 5001 was formed and is the original Garden City Charter Our Charter bears the names of two Priests: Rev. D.S. Hamilton & Rev. T.P. O'Donnell and 112 Charter members. The Council moved to Franklin Square presumably due to growing membership from the Franklin Square area.
